Alabama Football = NC State Basketball
We all know the debacle that was the NC State Basketball Coaching search and although it turned out pretty good for the Pack (Lowe has been making progress recruiting and with his 5-0 start), it was a national embarrassment the way Lee Fowlup handled the entire situation that I am trying to block out of my memory.
And although Fowlup and his staff looked foolishly in over their heads, Alabama has now taken the biggest moron crown away from him.
For those who don’t know, ‘Bama just fired Mike Shula. While I never thought Shula was the right hire, he took the tide to a 10-2 season last year and was given a 5 year contract extension just last year. The Tide struggled to a 6-6 season (after replacing a 3yr starting QB) and Shula was canned.
Their football coaching search has taken a turn to look scarily similar to the NC State basketball search, in one word UGLY. Bama, most likely its boosters, have not so subtly made a Gi-normous offer to South Carolina Head Coach Steve Spurrier (10 years, $39 million) which he very publicly turned down and emphatically stated he was going to stat at South Carolina (Read: Rick Barnes). In doing this, they have alienated an entire population of good (and big named) head coaches who will not want to be known as the 2nd choice.
The Crimson Tide, acting as smooth as a herd of elephants also let it out that they were maybe interested in Navy coach Paul Johnson but he quickly put the snuffer out on that rumor with this quote:
“”I am flattered to be rumored to be on the A-List for the open Head Coaching position at the University of Alabama. However, I am going to remain the Head Coach of the Navy Midshipmen and I am looking forward to preparing for our bowl game, and especially to next season, as I feel we have an opportunity to do something that hasn’t been done here at Navy in a long time. Again, thanks for putting my name out there, but no thanks.”"
That’s right people, the Navy coach just rejected the Tide into the cheap seats (Read: Spinless Memphis Hoops coach). Now, it could all be coach speak since he does have a bowl game to prepare for, but he sounds pretty sure he doesn’t want the ‘Bama job even before he was offered it.
Bama fans are as delusional as I thought the wolfpack fans were/are. They do not realize this is not the days of Bear Bryant and National Championships (Read: Jimmy V). Their program is a glimpse of what it was and while they were busy dealing with NCAA sanctions, the rest of their conference passed them by, sound familiar Wolfpack fans?
I’m not sure what ‘Bama plans to do next but I’m sure it involves throwing lots of money in someone’s direction, getting their hopes up, getting beat by Auburn for 5 more straight years and then starting the process over again.
So while I thought NC State fans were passionate but unrealistic about their place on basketball’s totem poll along with the fact the AD comes off as a complete moron in public, Alabama football fans have us all beat. This will be their 5th coach in 10 years. And unless someone can raise Bear Bryant from the dead, ‘Bama fans will never be happy enough.
Unrealistic and stuck in the past. Welcome to Alabama football.

Where did that Paul Johnson quote come from?
The Johnson quote is bogus.
