Chuck Amato: Force or Farce?
Chuck Amato is whinning. His rants in the papers today are sickening. He is complaining about the non-qualifiers for Akron.
Hey Chuck,
YOU LOST! To a team you should have beaten, non-qualifiers or not. You were in the position to win even with that pathetic offense and you lost. It wasn’t b/c of their non-qualifiers, it was b/c you can’t coach and you can’t hire an offensive coord.
I know your pride and joy is your non-conference record, but lets take another look at that little nugget. 26-4 over the last 6 years. Pretty good right?
A closer look at that reveals the following schedule of non-conference games:
2006: App St (DI-AA), Akron (L), Southern Miss, ECU
2005: Eastern Kentucky (D1-AA), Middle Tennessee St., South Florida (Meineke Bowl), Southern Mississippi
2004: Richmond (DI -AA), Ohio State (L), ECU
2003: Western Carolina(D1-AA), Ohio State (L), Texas Tech, Kansas (Tangerine Bowl)
2002: New Mexico, East Tenn St (D1-AA), Navy, Umass (DI AA), Notre Dame (Gator Bowl)
2001: Indiana, SMU, Ohio, Pittsburgh (L) Tangerine Bowl
2000: Arkansas State, Indiana, SMU, Minnesota (Micron PC Bowl)
Out of 26 wins - 6 of them have been vs D1-AA teams
Out of 26 wins - 15 of them against teams that did not go to a bowl
Out of 26 wins - only 5 teams have been to more then 1 bowl in that 6 year span.
So yeah Chuck, your non-coference record is pretty good, but take out the D1-AA teams (which shouldn’t count anyway) and the 15 teams with losing records and you are 5-4. And that is including the 2 fluke teams that shouldn’t have made it to bowls (USF, Kansas).
Although Amato’s overall performance at the helm of the NC State program is already record setting - 3rd winningest coach in history & 2nd most bowls, we see how Chuck pads his stats so lets take a look Chuckie’s ACC record.
Chuck Amato’s ACC Record
* 23- 25 overall ACC record.
* Winning record against 2 ACC programs - Wake Forest and Duke.
* .500 record against 4 ACC programs.
* Losing record against 5 ACC programs.
* 11-5 vs the Big Four
Chuck’s Record Broken Down by Team
0-1 vs Boston College
2-4 vs Clemson
4-0 vs Duke
3-3 vs Florida State
2-4 vs Georgia Tech
2-4 vs Maryland
0-1 vs Miami
3-3 vs North Carolina
2-2 vs Virginia
1-1 vs Virginia Tech
4-2 vs Wake Forest
Chuck has done some great things at State. New Stadium, Decent recruiting (sans QB), and has brought football enthusiam in Raleigh to an all time high. The problem with that is if you don’t deleiver, it’s no ones fault but your own. You’ve been given the money, have been given the resources, but haven’t gotten it done. Who knows how bad it would have been w/o Philip Rivers ever wearing the Red and White.
What I don’t understand is how can he lose so many coaches. I think its been 12 in 6 years. That should raise a red flag for someone in the administration. When coaches depart to take the same job at Houston and Navy to name a few, something has to be wrong.
Another thing I don’t understand is the offensive coord. he hires. Why hire Noel Mazzone, when he sucked at Auburn, then sucked at Oregon St and after he sucked at NC State he got fired DURING a game at Ole Miss. That is piss poor, he should have never been on staff here. And Marc Trestman? He touts the Cleveland Browns and Miami Dolphins on his resume, when was the last time either one of them had a decent offense w/o a player named Kosher or Marino was there?!!
Now, I know a lot of State fans are dillusional and expect Chuck to win a national championship yesterday, I am not one of them. In fact, despite what Chuck says, I don’t think anyone could win an NC at State. It’s not what I expect. I’d be happy with 8-3 every year +/- a game. I just want decent football that doesn’t make me have to break out the Wild Turkey and B.B. King while watching it every fall.
PS - The West Coast Offense, hasnt worked ANYWHERE since Steve Young was playing!

When Bill Cowher gets here Chuck can focus on recruiting and defense.
A super post. Can we hire Steve Logan (he is good contrary to popular belief) or Bill Cowher (not that this will every happen, even if he does now own a house in Raleigh)?

Logan is the best offensive coach to coach in NC ever. All your comments are on point. The stadium improvements were in the planning before Amato got there though.
Wow, did I finally get through to you?
