NC State vs Alabama and Reggie Ball
I went to the State vs #10 Alabama game tonight with a friend of mine and here are my thoughts.
-State played uninspired early, lots of lazy passes.
-We miss Engin Atsur
-State shot horrible early. Bama was unconscious the whole game which led state to taking some quick shots and….
- a Lots of 1-and-dones.
-People always say Herb recruited guys to fit his system, which was true. He made mediocre players competitive in the ACC although most are not superstars. We have a lot of guys in the 6-5 to 6-8 range that are good fundamentally sound players but aren’t going to wow many people. Lowe is doing well with them.
-We don’t have any pure shooters or someone who can consistently hurt a team from the outside which makes it harder for our semi-big guys to score in the paint when a team has a good inside game such as Alabama
-State played the last 5 minutes really well. High energy and gave the ball to Brandon Costner, who was in the zone.
-Gavin had 10 Assists but couldn’t hit the broad side of the barn.
-Did anyone ever imagine that Ben McCauley, including Ben McCauley, that he would ever average around 20pts per game after watching him play in Herb’s system?
-State fans could have been a little more energetic but of course the team has some influence of that with its lazy play early on.
-I can see why Ronald Steele is an All-American
-Even though State lost, I am not as heart-broken as I was under a Herb Sendek loss, and I determined b/c I believe there is hope!
-We really miss Engin Atsur
-The guy at halftime air balled at least 8 3-pointers, what a choke job.
-I’m no expert but I believe State’s shooting troubles have to do with all of them fading away from the basket when taking a shot. A symptom of that is a lot of shots off the front iron. hmmmm
-Trevor Ferguson will add some much needed depth to the bench but I wouldn’t expect a double double from him too often.
-State missed a lot of free throws 10 for 18 and we lost by 7 pts. hmmmm
-Courtney Fells can jump through the roof, he looks for the alley oop on every break, stupid but I like it
-its nice to have fun at a basketball game again
-Why do cheerleaders hold one leg in the air and smile? Is there anything that screams tramp more? No, I’m not complaining![]()
Also, ACC Football fans, if you haven’t heard, Georgia Tech Quarterback Reggie Ball was declared academically ineligible for the bowl game vs West Virginia. He has been one of the most inconsistent QBs in ACC history, and I guess that also included his class attendance schedule. Poor Calvin Johnson.

Bryan Nieman is a fundamental player and a great story. But if he can’t make open three-pointers, he basically serves no purpose on the floor. Dennis Horner deserved more minutes in this game, and that’s the first time I’ve really questioned a Sidney Lowe move. Maybe it’s just me.
The guy at halftime getting booed was the best ever. Jackleg came out there with basketball shorts and sneakers on, about 6-3 or so, made the first three … then proceeded to airball about nine others. Complete tool and the students booed him even as he was walking down the tunnel.
Teddy Valentine is the worst referee on the face of the earth.
What happened to the dance team? Those chicks used to be hotter than a box of stolen tamales.
Alabama is a really, really good team. With their frontline and shooting the way they did from the perimeter, they would have beaten just about anyone last night.
Courtney Fells is a better player than he is showing. I wonder whether State would be better served running some plays for him to get him going early in the game.
Ben McCauley — heretofore known as Run BMC — is a terrific player.
Brandon Costner looks like he doesn’t care half the time, but if he doesn’t start getting some mention on these Freshman All-American lists, I’m going to start writing letters Cheeburger Cheeburger style.
If State gets any kind of consistency out of Grant, it is a much better and closer game throughout the contest.
Great heart and great effort. The Pack is going to be a dangerous out for anyone and everyone this year, especially when Atsur comes back and there is a legitimate eight-man rotation possible.
Evan sure has clout. One of my friends that has seats in section 108 said he looked over and saw I was sitting with Wendall Murphy (Evan) himself in section 106. No wonder Evan always has the inside scoop. We know now why we aren’t coaches. From Lowe’s description of Ferguson in the post-game interview, you would have thought the he had a triple double.
