NC State is Overreaction U.
No this isn’t about the loss to Maryland last night, its about tailgating at football. After the unfortunate shooting at a football tailgate in 2004, NC State administration did what it usually does and overreacted by implementing a 4hr tailgate rule. This means that gates only open 4hrs before game time. For the hardcore tailgaters, this blows.
Thankfully, some sense has come over a few people and they are debating whether or not to undue this rule. What I find interesting is the reaction of the Raleigh-ites in the N and O. You can obviously tell the age demographic just by reading this comments, these people think that you can’t get shot going to the grocery store or going to get your morning paper. The tailgate shooting was a freak incident by a couple of ignorant teenagers, it can happen anywhere at anytime. Don’t punish us all. Undue this retarded rule so NC State’rs can get back to the pig-cookin’, barbeque eatin’ tailgate style we are used to.

No one ever mentions that the incident involved people who weren’t NC State students and weren’t going to the NC State game. A home football game is an event.
If you’re serious about dealing with the actual issue, don’t allow tailgating for people without tickets to the game and/or don’t allow people to leave at halftime and come back. Instituting a four-hour tailgating rule in response to this incident is like forcing people to wear Band-Aids in case they get hurt.
i completely agree, people also forgot that this happened after the game had started, it wasn’t 6 hrs before tailgates started….
you’re exactly right though, i should have mentioned that they weren’t even NC State students but like every other good NC State tradition, the administration overreacted
Allegedly, the number of incidents of underage drinking, fights, etc. was exactly the same last year as it has been for the past 5.
This is a knee-jerk reaction to a terrible tragedy that I’m not sure could have been avoided. Why punish the fans for something a couple Wake Tech boys did while hanging out at a real stadium? It doesn’t make sense.
I have heard that they will extend the tailgating to 6 hours and that halftime pass out are about to be a thing of the past.
I like to get to the game at least 8 hours before hand. this allows for set up, pig cooking, take down, tossing the football around, shot-gunning beers, socializing, etc. This ridiculous rule has put a damper on my gameday experience. I’m far from being a high roller, but those fools just lost tens of thousands of cents because of their tomfoolery.
The halftime passes are a luxury we take for granted. Not many schools allow this. While i enjoy rolling out to the truck for some beers and revelry, i wouldn’t be traumatized if they get rid of them. I’ll just have to sneak in more liquor bottles.
from the N&O…as much as you’d like not to believe one was an NCSU student….
“…Timothy Johnson, 22, an N.C. State senior, and Tony Johnson, 20, had their first court appearance Tuesday and were appointed two of Raleigh’s best criminal defense lawyers. Joseph B. Cheshire V will represent Timothy Johnson, while Johnny Gaskins will represent the younger Johnson brother. The men from Tarboro, each charged with two counts of murder, are being held without bail at the Wake County jail.”
