Gun Control Issues in the US

Brent’s post yesterday brought up a conversation that I don’t think it was meant to; Gun Control. Now, I don’t really have an solid opinion one way or another for or against guns but I believe there are things we can do to help prevent another VaTech.

Yesterday it came out that the Virginia Tech killer, Cho Heing-Sui, had a lot of issues. Previous to the mass murder he executed in cold blood, he had been reported to police as disturbed by his English professor, stalked women on two different occasions and even spent some time in a mental hospital. Now to me, this is guy shouldn’t have been able to buy a gun.

Apparently, to buy a gun the shop has to run a background check on the customer, my question is, what the hell are they checking if they can’t find this stuff?

Guns are without a doubt instruments of death and I believe we could do without them but since there is this thing called the Constitution eliminating them is not an option. What we need to do is provide a better system to for checking background information. Sure it borders on invasion of privacy, but its a price I’m willing to pay in order to prevent another senseless massacre.

In regards to the whole VT thing, i think the real issue is mental health reform, but i guess that is for a different day.

In terms of gun control; i believe in the constitution of the united states, butthe spirit of the right to own and bear arms has been violated by assault-type weapons and those easily convertible to such. I cannot fathom legal circumstances under which a private citizen can justify the need for firepower on that scale in our society.

I think like most people, i think i’m not against people owning guns, but i see no reason for having to a damn Jesse “The Body” Ventura Predator-style machine gun.

gun control my @ss. The media is over hyping the guns, calling them “high powered” and “semi-automatic” to (no pun intended) trigger a response. Semi-automatic means nothing, and these weren’t any more high powered than a .22 rifle.

If it wasn’t a gun, he would have built a bomb with household items. Are we going to outlaw everything?

Guns suck, small, big, semi-auto or not. That fact will not change.

This could have been prevented with better background checking, there is no way around that.
