how to cancel your xbox live account

If you are trying to cancel your Xbox live account, here is the phone number to Xbox Live Customer Service 1-800-469-9269, but please read on and let me enlighten you to the process that you should expect and hopefully it won’t take as long as it did for me.

At first I google my little heart out trying to find Xbox Live Customer Support phone number to no avail. I found ever other number possible for Microsoft customer services, from MSN Hotmail to Microsoft Office Small Business support but nothing for xbox live.

I finally decide to call the general Microsoft number and to no surprise it routes you to a call center in India where I had to talk to some guy and try to get him to understand my name…. 4 times, Not Ethan, Steven, Ben…I finally spelled it out for him, E-V-A-N! And after giving him tons of uneccessary and mostly true ;) info, he finally says (in your typical bad Indian accent) “Thank you for calling Microsoft, how can we help you?”

Another 5 minutes of me trying to tell him I want to cancel my Xbox Live account “Oh you want Xbox? Let me transfer you Mr. Evan.” I’m waiting, “hold please………..hold please…………..hold please” he repeated 3 times pausing 30 seconds b/t each. Thankfully he finally transfered me back to an American in the Xbox Live department, who expectedly tried to tell me I should keep my Xbox Live account so that I could be ready when the 360 came out. Well thats great but I DONT HAVE AN XBOX anymore, i calmly told him 3 times… “OHH you sold your xbox?” After he decided to listen to what i was saying he canceled my account.

It was an interesting 20 minutes. I really wish American companies wouldn’t outsource their Customer Service to India, its really shitty service even if its that much cheaper, I would not do that for my business.

    Thanks for the info, I did got transfered to India and it was actually a very cool guy who helped me. I got my money refunded, because I purchased the XBox live service when I had already a different account associated to auto-renew for my son, long story short, I spent the money twice, and he understood the situation providing an excellent customer service.

    i cancelled my subscription account on the www.xbox.com/support site simply bye signing in going onto membership level which is to the lft just above manage account ...from there you can turn your automatic renewal off..then all u hav to do wait till your subscription has run out then go to manage account and remove your credit card.

    They got me by the 1-month-free-and-then-a-lifetime-of-payments plan.
    Called the number, told them I've moved to Israel where the service is not provided. The guy wanted to confirm a few details - which I read him from the XBOX site itself. No added security there. Got a confirmation number.
    Checked their site immediatly - and found out that the automatic renewal was already turned off.

    All in all - a smooth experience. Took me about 7 minutes and cost me only those 7 minutes.

    You can cancel online now. All you have to do is sign in to your account and then turn off automatic renewal!! Simple as that.

    Just cancelled mine this morning. I am so jealous of you guys that got an American. I swear I would PAY for the privilege of talking to an American. I think I got suckered into paying for another month of service cause they said they can't stop the charge going on tomorrow.

    I have to say... my old credit card expired and they kept sending me nasty emails about that. Funny.. they kept my service on though. Of course, as soon as I used my new credit card to buy points they started charging that. I should have contested the charges through my bank. Oh well hindsight.

    For comparison, try cancelling Netflix or Tivo. Just try that one day. Netflix is online and Tivo was so pleasant (and American!) I almost wanted to cry.

    I hate Microsoft. God bless my new PS3.

    I called the support line and after all that, I got to the American line where the operator told me, "of so you are -----------?" I said no, that's my dad...."oh well sir it needs to be your dad and I am not allowed to cancel X-box on this number anyways, you will have to call this reference number with your dad." Inbetween all of that, he was trying to convince me NOT to cancel my x-box live and I was getting pretty angry so I started yelling to him "It's broken!! For the third time now, it broke! I'm done, that's it. Understand!?" Should have been nicer but whatever....gets on my nerves lol -.-

    So now I have to make ANOTHER call after waiting for 30 minutes with those fools.....X-box permanently sucks because of this.

    Used 1-800-469-9269 to call and cancel my month to month subscription three days prior to renewal. Informed them first thing that I was recording the call. Yes there were a lot of security questions, but I appreciate their due diligence and the friendliness of the agent. I made sure to have them state that I would not be charged again. Should there be a problem, I look forward to using Microsoft's own sound recorder program against them. Otherwise, excellent customer service.

    I hate all Miscrosoft. It was pretty easy to cancel over the phone, obviously they don't allow us to cancel via internet in hopes that we'll just give up and continue our account. That would be efficient and we all know MS doesn't believe in efficiency or speed. Writing this on my Mac Pro, I've never felt more confident in any other machine then I have with this one.     I feel rally stupid because I just traided my Xbox in to Gamestop and now some punk kid has renewed his membership with my credit card on file on my Xbox. Wow, that was a really bad move on my part, I just forgot to delete that stuff you know. Dont do what I did people make sure to delete that stuff off your mechine befor you go traiding it in to someone.

    I called and canceled mine. It took 25 of my cell phone minutes, mostly waiting on hold to get a person. I think he was Indian, but spoke very clear. The main thing to remember is, KEEP YOUR COOL. I've worked for cancellations at Microsoft and IT SUCKS!! People are pissed off all day long calling you. People get grey hair in 1-3 years working for Microsoft and age 5 times faster than normal people from all the stress. It is a terrible way to make a living and I DID NOT TAKE SHIT FROM ANY RUDE CUSTOMERS. I talked back, I was a smart ass who hung up on rude people and purposely transferred them to wrong places, if not to a 900 sex line. The point is, they are not any happier than you, it is not their fault, it is Microsoft and their legal teams no giving a damn about the customers who BUILT THEIR COMPANY!!!

    This is so typical of big companies like MS. Samll companies you tend to check very carefully what the cancilation policies are nearly every service you sign up for online is easily canciled online. However, MS desides to makes canliling your service or even obtianing info on how to cancil extreamly difficult. The most messed up par is when wou serch support for "how to cancil" you get a lundry list of reasons not to cancil but no info on how to do it. Thanks to this site i finally got it canciled after the better part of 4 hours and 6 operators in different departments. Once i got to the correct peroson it took them another hour just to cancil it. DO NOT SIGN UP FOR XMOX LIVE IF YOU THINK YOU MAY WANT TO CANCIL. How about a class action suite!!! Bill has lots of money. My billing rate is $250 per hour so the way i see it they owe me $1500 + punitive damages and the three months of service i paid for becuse i did not have the time to try to figure out how to cancil.

    In recession times people may want to skip a few months , and rejoin when they have a new game. With me its seasonal, summertime we are outside , winter is xbox time.

    I'm trying to cancel my account as well and after 15 minutes of collecting my info the operator says that they are doing a "system upgrade" right now and can't pull up my account, therefore can not cancel it. I will have to call back another time when the system is accessible. It makes me think if they hear someone wants to cancel their service that they give you the run-around to avoid having to do it.... what a scam.

    What I do not understand is how this Microsoft X-Box got ahold of my debt card #. They have gone into my checking account and tried to take out money 20 times @ $62.50 and $25.00 at each occurrance. I NEVER signed up for any Microsoft XBox. Any ideas how this could have happened? I alerted my bank and they are denying all the charges and I had to cancel my debt card.

    After purchasing an initial x-box 360, then having the red ring of death on 2 replacements that microsoft provided me, now my 4th system just got the red ring of death (have only had the latest system for 10 days)...I'm not putting another dollar into this company to receive products that break quickly. I called the number and after about 4 minutes I have my confirmation number. I received a PS3 for x-mas and low and behold...I dont have to pay a monthly fee to play games online and or download content. Awesome!

And in all this time they haven't changed it. Because marketing people have no souls. They know they are pissing off customers who are leaving, so they don't give a flying fuck.     I spent over 4 hours on hold listening to the most horrific music so I could cancel my son's account that started out as a "Trial Membership". My phone actually lost juice before anyone ever answered the call.

    I finally called my credit card company and through the DISPUTE Dept. I have canceled the XBOX live acct. and my credit card company reversed the charges. They said call them again if this does not stop the charges.

    No wonder Bill Gates is a multi-billionaire. He's a genius too at robbing us blind.

    I'm pissed. Microsoft pissed me off. So I called their phone line and went through their robot (he was very well mannered in any case) and after saying "I would like to cancel my xbox live account for the 360" (In a clear, steady voice) I am put on hold. This hold lasts a good 30 seconds, not too bad a suppose. I hear a click and a voice on the other line greets me, human this time. So I say politely " I'm calling about canceling my xbox live subscription" and she replies " uhhh, sorry sir, but I think you have the wrong number." Bewildered I responded "But I was transferred here! I was talking to an interactive answering machine and it transferred me here, It can't be my fault!" and calmly she replied "Sir, this is an Alaskan Air-force base, what are you calling about again?"

    At that point I hung up the phone. True story, no lies.

    I was wondering if anyone can give me the US number for xbox live cancellation. Cause I use Prepaid cards from Wal-Mart and I'm thinking about canceling couple of my accounts. Why would I have more than one account? Don't even ask me cause I don't know why.

    Haha they really do try to screw you over. I called the first time, went through the automated menu and then was never forwarded to a representative. Just sat there for a few minutes doing nothing. Called back, went through the automated menu again I was of course forwarded to a call center in guess where... INDIA! So when they asked for my gamertag I would say I as in India just to make sure they understood me haha. It was quick but it was annoying that they tried to offer me 100 microsoft points to keep the account. Oh well, thanks for the info man. I've been trying to cancel for a while.

    Well my experience went pretty smooth taking into account what I've been reading about the service.
    I called the 1-800-469-9269 number which prompted me to a automated voice, I answered couple of questions. After that got prompted to an operator which I explained clearly that I would like my credit card remove from my Xbox live account.
    So he asked me for my info.
    Note: best way to do this if you don't remember ur info is to login on xbox live and go to the "marketplace" follow through under Account management and there should be you alternate email,address and so on.
    He told me that the auto paid feature will disactivate from my card and that the card will be remove in a period of 10 days after which my subscrition would also be cancel (that was probably due to the fact that I was on a month to month plan).

    So if you were paying 3month or something I would guess that your subscription would last up to it's proper time and your credit card should be removed before that.

    Might be a good question to ask them if that is the case for you. Also they ask me for my current phone number so that they can reach me for updates. I was content to the fact that my card will be remove from live because their billing method is quite unusual. I'll make sure to update you guys on how everything turned out.

    ALL YOU GUYS WHO BELIEVE THEY GOT YOUR ACCOUNTS FINALLY CANCELLED WITH A PHONECALL BETTER READ THIS THIS! WE Cancelled our X-Box live account in May. I Augiust we were still paying monthly. We caled the 1-800 nuber to India and recieved a confirmation that it is finally cancelled and they gave us a reference number. Now in October we find they just started billing us again monthly.     When I cancel my Xbox silver membership, does my profile turn back into an offline profile? I normally do not have access to internet, so I do not play games using Live. What I do want is the freedom of changing my gamertag to whatever I want. Since I do not connect to Live, I can choose whatever name I want without conflict. In the end, I want my profile to become an offline profile again.

But the next day i checked my bank account and there was a charge from microsoft!!! Guess they got me! Calling back today, they better refund my 8 dollars...hahah.

    I just found this site googling for xbox cancelation info. I cancelled the account a few weeks ago somehow online, but of course it didn't actually cancel it.

    After getting billed again I tried to cancel again and could only find the "call customer service" crap, so I called to cancel. Had to argue with the guy for about 20min because a friend had givin me his CC info to pay for a month for me and I didn't have all the card info on hand. I asked him repeatedly why I needed all the personal info from the CC to CANCEL the account.

    Finally the guy cancelled my account and I owe my friend for the extra month. At least, I hope it cancelled. Can't wait to see if they continue to charge my friend. This is idiotic.

    Canceled my account on Aug 1st after jumping through hoops. On Aug 11th they charged me again! I called Microsoft and thy made absolutely no sense before telling me to call my bank. Long story short I filed a claim with my bank and they refunded the money.

    There should really be some class action law suit against them for this, it's clearly not an isolated incident.

    No luck here. I'm sure my call was routed overseas, where I spoke to a person with an odd voice and stilted grammar, but no accent. I'm pretty sure they're using some sort of voice synthesizer to remove their accents. Really. If you heard it, you'd think so too. Maybe I'll call the UK too. Meanwhile, here's the message I sent to my bank, where the monthly XBox fee is charged to my ATM card.

    "I have just spent a long time on the phone with Microsoft, trying to cancel the XBox Live service. I gave them my name, address, phone number, check card number, every email address I can remember having, and my child's XBox user name. They say they can't find my account. However, they have no trouble finding it once a month when they want money

    Here it is on my statement: 07/18/2008 Purchase PURCHASE MICROSOFT *XBOX 07/17 $7.99

    Can you give me any info that might help them find and cancel my account, or can you stop paying the charge? Then maybe someone who knows who I am will contact me.

    Just called them, mostly smooth experience. Thanks Evan for the number. I talked to someone who I could barely understand. He asked for all the info (I couldnt understand his name.) He gave me a confirmation number and everything, then transferred me to someone else I dont know why, who did the same thing again and gave me yet another very similar confirmation number. They assure me it is cancelled, but we will see on the 18th. I will post here again if there is any trouble. Entire procces took 16 minutes. Should have been faster, but oh well, thats how call centers work I guess.

    You know, I think you guys are just all a bunch of whiney babies, and maybe mentally challenged at that. If want to cancel your XBOX ACCOUNT, the maybe go and type WWW.XBOX.COM in the URL bar?? DUH! Then go to the bottom of the page, look for something that says "CONTACT US". You can contact them by email or over the phone. It's very easy quite actually, if you do it right, it shouldn't take more than 10 minutes, and even if it did take 20 minutes, is it really that big of a deal?? It only took 20 minutes for you because you had to "Google your little heart out", idiot. Who wouldn't think Xbox would have a website were you could probably contact them, and even if you had to Google search the number, how hard could that be. Here is the first link that pops up if you type "Xbox Customer Support": www.xbox.com/support. Try to learn some of this stuff before you nag about companies "horrible" service.

    Microsoft are the lame. Took me a couple minutes to give my credit card info through my xbox......took me an hour to find out how to cancel my damn subscription. I've paid for 10 months, only used it 1; But couldn't be bothered to find out how to cancel it because you cant on xlive. Rediculous.

    Odd, I wonder why they'd let some ppl here cancel there's, and the guy who spoke to me told me they didn't have the tools to do so. Mine was just done to a Silver Account and then blocked from access, but it bugs me that my account is still sitting there on their end, with my credit card info, for some reason.

    If you cancel before your yearly subscription is up, they try to refuse to refund your remaining balance, but if you're persistent, you CAN get a REFUND if you demand it. I called to cancel and they gave me the b.s. about "no refunds unless you cancel within 60 days of payment" in the so-called Terms of Service. I told them that I know that courts do not uphold that kind of boilerplate language that nobody reads, and given that I still had more than half a year to go, I knew my rights and was entitled to a refund. They refused, but I called again the next day (during the week) (on the weekend, don't bother, it seems like foreign staff who I honestly think are not authorized to refund you). When I called again the next day, I got U.S. staff and after some back and forth they offered me a partial refund (my remaining balance, minus $5.99 to continue for one more month instead of the whole term). I accepted that, but of course, a few weeks later, no credit had shown up yet to my credit card, so I had to call AGAIN at which time they told me the agent hadn't processed it, but they couldn't give me a reason, saying "maybe the agent didn't understand it." Which is BS of course, given that it was an offer that THEY made to ME - how could they not understand their own offer? Clearly, they were just hoping I would forget about it and never follow up. I did, and I got my refund. When you add up that they advertise "cancel anytime" (which is misleading bc they don't mention that they'll refuse to refund you for your remaining unused balance), let you sign up online but not cancel online, make you wait forever on the phone to cancel or demand your payment, and make you call again to follow up in order to get them to honor their own agreement - it's clear they're just hoping to keep your $$ because you'll give up or forget. Despicable. I bought my Xbox at launch but I won't be buying 360. Good job, Microsoft - try to cheat me out of my $30 refund, lose a $500 sale. Smart.

    Anyway, the moral of the story: KEEP CALLING. They will give in. My suggestion: put them on speakerphone and play Halo really loud while waiting for them and talking to them. Then the wait time will seem shorter, and they'll have to give in before they burn too much more customer service time (which costs them $$) on you. They'll pay off the persistent customers and just keep trying to cheat the ones who give up.

I have emailed, phoned America, spoken to their idiotic computer voice answering person called MAX and its absolutely useless. I eventually spoke to somebody in USA and after taking lots of details he informed me that he would have to transfer my call to another part of America because that area could not deal with my call! What the fuck is that about. (I dont normally sware but I am so mad it hurts!) After holding on to the phone for ages.. I started to curse and sware down the phone and low and behold a woman answered and said dont worry Eric I will be dealing with your call shortly.. funny thing is, she was not in another part of America, but in the same office as the original man???? Fucking lies to keep you online until you get so fed up you hang up!!! and they can bill you again... bloody criminals... no wonder Bill Gates is super rich, he is exploiting everyone he can like some bloodsucking leech. After talking to the woman and giving all my info once more, I was told to phone the UK line number as they could not fix the problem there!!!!! Well why not tell me that in the first instance!! Thieving bastards! Next I phone the uk number ... and surprise surprise I am kept waiting for 45mins before some guy called Paul answers.. by now I am raging and seriously considering NOT renewing my membership. I inform this guy that I had disconected my Xbox because I was refurbishing my room, and have now bought a new game £44, a gold live membership £40, online points 2100 £18 and that I cannot connect to live Xbox. He informs me that I owe Microsoft £9.82 and thats why? How do I owe you that when I never authorise payments from my credit card? its an automatic subscription renewal, and you owe us that amount. But I never asked for another 3 months subscription I was not online at all! Sorry but you owe us £9.82 and we cannot renew your online subscription. So I am really mad now... okay I want my money back for the gold membership etc., how can I get this refunded? you can take it back to the shop... oh but I have scatched off the number when I tried to renew so the shop will not believe me that it has not been used? okay you are right, you will not be able to get your money back!!!!!! So I told him your wrong.. I WILL get my money back because I will go to the small claims court to recover the money that Microsoft have attemted to steal from me...... Everyone join me and fuck these lousy bastards!!!!!

    I just got irate with those people. They told me that their system was down and that I would have to call back tomorrow. I told them that they needed to write down the information that they would normally take, and then type it in the system when it came back up...it is not my responsibility to have to call back at their convenience. After arguing with them for over 20 minutes, a manager took my information and told me to call back tomorrow to verify that the account was canceled. No, I will not call back...I will join the class action lawsuit if I am charged again...think I will just cancel my credit card to be safe.

    Rang the Uk number, pressed the numbers ( Held at start, 1 then 2) Listened to some wierd hold music while a badly recorded message asked me to be patient, eventually got throught to a very nice indian chap with good english, whole thing done in under 15 minutes, will need to speak card holder and will ask about friends and relatives, option given to cancel immedatly or just b4 subscription ends... dont risk it - Good luck all who try

    I am looking for others who have tried in vain to cancel their xbox live account only to have MS continue to charge them month after month. We are now into the 4 month of cancellation and MS continues to charge us. I really think it is their policy to continue charging people after cancellation and I am trying to find out if others have had the same problem. If I can find enough people who have had the same experience, my attorney will look at filing a class action suit against MS.

    Please respond only if you feel you have a legitimate complaint against MS.

    It took 15minutes for the nice Indian lady to cancel my account. First I told her that my girlfriend was threatening to leave me because I spent too much time on my xbox. Then I told her I was drinking way to much alcohol while on xbox, then she tried to tell me I could pass on the account to a friend or nephew, and then I told her that because I played so much xbox, I no longer have friends & my family disowned me lol and I was about to lose my girlfriend because I was preferring to play xbox than with the girlfriend lol.

    finally, the account was cancelled and I was given my confirmation number.

    Used the number, ready for trouble I asked for the rep's last name -said she couldnt provide but gave me her "Badge Number". She verified it was my account and cancelled the auto renewal and then gave me a ten digit reference number at the end. I put my notes in a file in the drawer in case any problems next month.

    I suppose I am the exception to this. I dialed the Xbox support number, and went through the automated sequence to talk to a live representative about cancelling my Live account. I was greeted by an American representative, gave him a few details about my account, and it was closed within 4-5 minutes. He even gave me a reference number. Sorry it wasn't this easy for the rest of you!

    canceling this is absolutely rediculous. you should be able to cancel through the console. should not take 21 minutes to cancel a monthly subscription. its not even like im leaving xbox, i told the guy that i was given a 12 month subscription as a gift (that was bought in a store) and it still took forever.

    I am floored that Xbox live can renew a subscription without any kind of notification to the owner. Okay they say, "We sent an email." not everyone checks and most often I delete spam mail.     Thanks for the tip. I thought you could do it from the dashboard under account management. I waited about 10 minutes on hold, got an Indian lady. After I gave her the info, she put me on hold for about 3 minutes and came back to tell me it was cancelled and gave me a confirmation number.

    Yeah. I havnt OWNED an Xbox in 2 years. I've cancelled my subscription twice, to no avail.

    Today I just got a confirmation email about renewing my subscription to XBox live!?? WTF. It's a yearly subscription and I want to get my goddamn money back.

    This is the second time they've screwed me over. I just put in my paycheck this week and I cant pay my bills now because Microsoft's massive cock has just taken out 50$ without notifying me that I even HAD a working XBOXlive account to begin with.

    You can sign up from the web or from the xbox itself, but they make it nearly impossible to find out how to cancel the account and then find excuses to put you on hold in the hopes you'll hang up and they can screw you for another year's fees. This should be a class action lawsuit in the making if you ask me....
